2015 scandinavian hjemkomst and Midwest Viking festival
2015 is the featured year for Finnish and Saami cultures! Both local groups are taking part in the planning of the 38th Annual Scandinavian Hjemkomst Festival. Festival programming will have a Finnish and Saami flair. Activities will be found both inside and outside.
Inside, storytellers will regale audiences with tales and music rich in culture and history, demonstrators will show off their artistic talents and crafts, and each club proudly sells a variety of ethnic food from their represented countries.
We are joined by the musical talents of New York Kammermusiker, the Park Rapids Area Community Band, and the Two Talls. Special performances dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of Finnish composer Jean Sibelius will be given Saturday, June 27th by the Park Rapids Area Community band with vocal group Saana Ensemble and Finnish brass band Ameriikan Poijat. Additional performances by them can be heard throughout the festival.
Located outside will be a Saami traditional lavvu tent village. Here visitors will enjoy presentations on Saami heritage, learn about Saami culture, and experience the musical talent of Saami yoiker Nathan Muus. The Saami will have a special tribute to Faith Fjeld, the late editor of Baiki, the North American Saami journal and leader of the North American Sami Reawakening.
We will again be partnering with the Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County and the Midwest Viking Festival. Join us for a living Viking Village complete with costumed Vikings. Here you will find blacksmiths, craftspeople, live music, and daily weapon demonstrations and battle reenactments. Children will be encouraged to engage in traditional Viking games and hands-on traditional crafts like wool felting, coin striking, and rune writing.
A beer garden will be located outdoors with the Viking Festival.
